Burglar is a Joker that increases your hands per round at the cost of losing all discards. This has the added benefit of increasing your income if you can beat the Blind without using all of your hands.
Synergies[]
Decks[]
- Red Deck: Burglar negates this deck's +1 Discard bonus, leaving the player with 0 extra Discards. Since the extra Discard is the only benefit for selecting this deck, Burglar is a poor choice to accompany it.
- Blue Deck: Burglar adds +3 Hands on top of this deck's +1 Hand bonus, making this a good combo for builds that depend on playing many hands each round.
- Green Deck: Burglar's extra Hands can potentially increase the earnings from this deck's $2 per remaining hand bonus, but it eliminates this deck's $1 per remaining discard bonus.
- Black Deck: Burglar is useful for compensating for this deck's -1 Hand penalty.
Poker Hands[]
Because Burglar enables repeated hand played, weaker but easier to assemble hands like High Card, Pair, Two Pairs synergies well with this Joker.
Jokers[]
- Ride the Bus, Green Joker, Square Joker, Spare Trousers, or Supernova will all have extra opportunities to scale.
- Burglar's removal of all Discards ensures Mystic Summit's +15 Mult bonus will trigger on all hands.
- Blueprint and Brainstorm will both give even more hands on top of Burglar's own without a downside, as you can freely rearrange your Jokers afterwards.
- Additionally, because Burglar triggers right as you begin the round, you can actually have Blueprint/Brainstorm copy a Marble Joker or Cartomancer when the blind is selected, then QUICKLY swap Blueprint/Brainstorm to Burglar, and get the benefits of both. This requires very quick timing, however.
- Vagabond will have extra hands to create more Tarot Cards.
- Card Sharp will have extra opportunities to boost a hand.
- Loyalty Card can trigger every blind.
- Ramen and Green Joker will never deplete.
Burglar has anti-synergy with the following Jokers:
- Any Joker which cares about unused discards, including Banner and Delayed Gratification
- Any Joker that lose effect upon hands played, like Seltzer will likely be used up faster.
- Jokers which care about you discarding (eg. Faceless Joker)
- Jokers which give extra discards (eg. Drunkard and Merry Andy)
Blinds[]
Burglar can neutralize the effect of the following Blinds:
- The Needle (Play only 1 hand): Burglar activates after the boss reduces the number of hands to 1, resulting in a final total of 4 hands.
- The Water (Start with 0 discards): As players would've started with 0 discards regardless, and can use additional hands from Burglar as discards.
However, losing all your discards can be very crippling against certain Boss Blinds, which apply disruptive effects after playing a hand, including:
- The Hook will discard two cards randomly after each hand played, making it extremely hard to build a specific hand.
- Also, if you already have a high count of hands (6 or more for standard 52-card decks) or a small deck, it's possible to use up all cards from the deck, resulting in an instant game over.
- The Mouth: If you don't draw a good starting hand, it is impossible to discard it, and all following hands will have to be of the same type.
- The Fish: Your starting hand will be the only cards you see face up, and you'll be playing blind once you play them.
- The Tooth: Since you must use hands as discard, it's possible to lose up to $30 against The Tooth, which can cripple your economy.
Depending on the player's build, one may even consider selling Burglar before selecting the Boss Blind in order to normally get discards for dealing with the Boss.
Strategies[]
- Burglar is useful to scale any Jokers that requires lots of hands to build up. This includes Ride the Bus, Green Joker, Square Joker, Spare Trousers, or Supernova.
- Burglar is very strong if you have jokers which grant money/resources for each hand played, such as Reserved Parking, Space Joker or Vagabond.
Trivia[]
- The Burglar wears the classic black-and-white stripes of an American prison uniform, first introduced in the New York prison system in the 1820s. This suggests the Burglar is also currently an inmate of a jail, or perhaps an escapee.
