Cartomancer is an Uncommon Joker. It is an effect Joker that creates a random Tarot Card each time a Blind is selected. The wide-ranging effects of Tarot Cards allows the player to easily manipulate their Deck in a variety of directions, but this same variance can also make it slightly unreliable. It tends to be much stronger in the early-game than later on, because of this.
Synergies[]
Decks[]
- Black Deck: Its inherent +1 Joker slot allows Cartomancer to be used alongside 5 other scoring Jokers. Moreover, acquiring The Hermit or Temperance early from this Joker's effect can help this Deck reach its ceiling sooner, by overstepping its largest weakness: its poor early-game economy.
- Magic Deck: This 52-stack of wizardry starts the player with the Crystal Ball Voucher, giving an extra consumable slot to hold more Tarot Cards. This serves several functions when combined with this Joker: scoring-oriented Tarot cards like Justice can be stored to save a run in a pinch; the starting copies of The Fool will have easier access to more desirable targets, and potentially unwanted Tarot Cards can be stored to prevent them from reappearing elsewhere (unless the player also has Showman). Obtaining earlier access to the Omen Globe Voucher can be of potential interest, too - by allowing Spectral Cards to appear in the Arcana Packs, they can be viewed as potential mini-Spectral Packs, as there would already be a reliable source of Tarot Cards.
- Anaglyph Deck: With emphasis placed on skipping Blinds for duplication of powerful Tags, it has slight anti-synergy with this Joker. It can still be very useful early on, however, especially in the absence of particularly strong Tags (which can be a lifesaver if The Pillar Boss Blind is encountered, as cards modified by most Tarot Cards will no longer count as having been played that round).
Poker Hands[]
Cartomancer does not synergize directly with any poker hand. It provides very slight favor to the 5-card hands, however, as they provide more opportunities for Enhancements (applied by Tarot Cards) to pump up the score.
Jokers[]
The following Jokers have synergy with Cartomancer:
- Fortune Teller: Perhaps the strongest synergy that either of these two have, it will gain +1 Mult for each Tarot Card used. Skipping as few Blinds as possible, while maximizing on Arcana Packs and copies of The Fool and The Emperor can easily shoot it up to +40 Mult or more. To strengthen the case, it scales retroactively, meaning that it will not be any weaker if this Joker is acquired first than if they were simultaneously.
- Jokers that scale based on hands/cards played are a good choice, as using this Joker means wanting to see as many Blinds as possible. These include Green Joker, Ride the Bus, Runner, Square Joker, Supernova, Spare Trousers, Wee Joker, and Obelisk.
- The Enhancement series Jokers ( Glass Joker, Golden Ticket, Lucky Cat, Steel Joker, and Stone Joker) all become more accessible while using this Joker. If focusing on a specific type of Enhancement, Cartomancer can more easily balloon their high power by finding the relevant Tarot Card, as well as copies of The Fool. Of these, Lucky Cat is perhaps the most synergistic, as more Blinds played means more Tarot Cards created, and also more chances to trigger Lucky Cards.
- Blueprint and Brainstorm: These two can copy Cartomancer's effect at the start of a Blind, meaning 2 or possibly even 3 unique Tarot Cards to choose from, or at the very worst, a bit of extra money for the next Shop. The Joker lineup can also be rearranged immediately afterward to assist with scoring.
- Campfire: In the event the Tarot Cards are unneeded, this Joker can provide a X0.75 Mult boost to Campfire on each Ante, which can shoot even higher if The Emperor or The High Priestess are generated.
- Perkeo: An exceedingly rare Legendary Joker that creates a Negative copy of a random held consumable at the end of the Shop (meaning it does not take up a consumable slot). This essentially doubles the effect of this Joker, if it creates an ideal Tarot Card, which can be used in bulk when the time comes to more or less mold the Deck into an ideal build. Alternatively, should their effects not be needed, this duo can be a source of incredible economy, due to the higher sell value of the duplicated cards.
The following Jokers have anti-synergy with Cartomancer:
- Throwback: A Joker that strictly encourages skipping as many Blinds as possible. This Joker will have less opportunities to create Tarot Cards if scaling it is more of a priority.
Vouchers[]
- The aforementioned Crystal Ball pairs very nicely with this Joker, for all the same reasons (run-saving, ease of Deck fixing, and Shop RNG manipulation).
- Hieroglyph and its upgraded counterpart Petroglyph allow the player to see up to 3 additional Blinds each, which means even more Tarot Cards to enhance Deck quality. These should be avoided when using the Black Deck, however, as 2 hands and, in the case of Petroglyph, 1 discard every round, is a near guaranteed run loss unless the other held Jokers and poker hand levels are contributing enough raw score.
Trivia[]
- This Joker's art is stylised to mimic a Tarot Card, mirroring Astronomer which has comparable unlock requirements to Cartomancer and is stylised to mimic a Planet Card.
