Balatro has 8 stakes, which add progressively ramping difficulty modifiers to each game. To unlock a stake for a deck, you must complete a run using the highest currently unlocked stake. Progression through the different stakes is unique to each starting deck, meaning that you must unlock each stake individually for each deck.
The 8 stakes, listed in the order that they are unlocked. Note that each stake applies the modifiers of all previous stakes.

Trivia[]
- In an interview with Bloomberg, Localthunk has confirmed that he plans to change the "blue stake" in the 2025 Gameplay Update.
- It can be assumed that, like with the previous versions of Gold and Orange Stake, something more complex and interesting would change the static "-1 Discard", having the chance of adding a new In-Run Sticker or a whole new game element.
- The unused stake in the game files with the joker face may have been named "Jimbo Stake", as that is the name of the foil badge for Balatro on Steam
