Balatro Wiki

Vagabond is a rare Joker that spawns a Tarot card when a hand is played, provided players have a free consumable slot and $4 or less when the hand is played.

Money generation like the 1/15 $20 payout from Lucky Cards, Gold Seals on scoring cards, and Gold Cards held in hand (or scoring through Golden Ticket Golden Ticket) that take you over $4 upon playing will still generate the Tarot card along with their additional money effect.

Synergies[]

Decks[]

  • Green Deck Green Deck isn't reliant on Interest to gain money, so spending everything you have to trigger Vagabond won't impact your ability to buy from the Shop as much. However, much of Green Deck's income is from leftover hands, which you won't have if you are using them all to trigger Vagabond.
  • Blue Deck Blue Deck allows more hands to be played, meaning more triggers of Vagabond.
  • Magic Deck Magic Deck's extra consumable slot is very helpful for saving useful Tarots. (Inversely, Nebula Deck Nebula Deck's fewer consumable slots make it significantly harder to use the Tarots from Vagabond.)
  • Zodiac Deck Zodiac Deck's unique shop makes it easier to spend money to reach the $4 threshold and generally helps the Tarot-stacking builds Vagabond tends to form.

Jokers[]

Credit Card Credit Card allows you to go up to $20 in debt which greatly enables staying below $4 to generate Tarot cards.

Jokers that scale based on hands played, like Ride the Bus Ride the Bus, Green Joker Green Joker, and, occasionally, Obelisk Obelisk, are helpful to pair with Vagabond, as they grow more powerful in the process of using Vagabond to its full potential. Furthering this idea, Burglar Burglar allows more hands to be played to both generate more Tarots and scale these Jokers.

Jokers that want large quantities of Tarot cards used very much appreciate Vagabond. These include Enhancement-based Jokers like Steel Joker Steel Joker, Glass Joker Glass Joker, and Lucky Cat Lucky Cat; suit-based Jokers like Bloodstone Bloodstone and Arrowhead Arrowhead; and rank-based Jokers like Walkie Talkie Walkie Talkie and Shoot the Moon Shoot the Moon. Tarot cards are used for many things, so many Jokers can benefit from the Tarots Vagabond generates.

Fortune Teller Fortune Teller is a useful scaling Joker Vagabond can pair with. It will end up scaling faster than Jokers like Green Joker, too, as the Tarots used in shops still scale it.

Acrobat Acrobat is very helpful, as it provides a safety net for the final hand of the round. This final hand will, ideally, always be reached, as using every hand to maximize Tarot production is the main goal of Vagabond.

One does not usually need to discard with Vagabond, so Jokers that want to save discards, like Ramen Ramen and Delayed Gratification Delayed Gratification, can be useful additions to builds using Vagabond.

Vagabond can be copied by Blueprint Blueprint and Brainstorm Brainstorm, allowing players to generate extra Tarots with every hand.

Money generation that triggers after the round, like from Golden Joker Golden Joker and Satellite Satellite, is very helpful, as it allows you to still utilize shops without needing bonus money from hands or interest.

Driver's License Driver's License and Vampire Vampire are the one of the best jokers for converting all of the enhanced cards that Vagabond has made into a powerful endgame strategy.

The best joker that synergies best with Vagabond is Campfire, which is guaranteed to scales x0.25mult per hand played.

Other synergies[]

  • Be careful when using Lucky Cards with Vagabond, as winning $20 from it will cause Vagabond to stop generating Tarot cards until the next blind.
  • Because Vagabond usually generate 1 to 2 Tarot cards per hand played, Blue Seal becomes harder to utilize as players may not have enough consumable slots to hold both.
  • The Tooth The Tooth is a blind that synergies with the Vagabond, bringing the player's money down into the range that Vagabond can activate.

Trivia[]

  • The card art for this Joker was made by Pixel Artist, Animator, and YouTuber Lumpy Touch. This was the only card in the game whose pixel art was not done by LocalThunk, until some of the Friends of Jimbo arrived.
    • The Joker resembles a clown character named Weary Willie, created by the late circus performer Emmett Leo Kelly.
  • Vagabonds are wandering people who have no set home or job, often associated with being poor. This fits the design of the Joker, being a poor-looking man with worn clothes depicted on a worn-out and damaged card, and the effect based on having low, no or negative money.
